Second reprieve in under two months extends temporary protections for ukrainian and sudanese immigrants in the us

Protections continue for now

Ukrainian and Sudanese immigrants in the United States received a temporary reprieve on Monday, the day their protections were scheduled to end. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed that they can retain their legal status for now. A Homeland Security spokesperson said decisions about Ukrainian and Sudanese TPS holders would be announced “at the appropriate time.” The statement did not provide a date for those announcements.

Extensions amid wider immigration actions

The latest extension is the second in less than two months for some people covered by TPS. It comes as President Donald Trump pursues deportations of other foreign nationals as part of a wider immigration crackdown. In September, the administration allowed Salvadoran TPS holders to keep their protections, after previously moving to end protections for Haitians, Venezuelans, Somalis, Yemenis, Syrians and others.

Other country-specific protections

El Salvador received TPS after two devastating earthquakes in 2001 left hundreds of thousands of people homeless. Before leaving office, President Joe Biden extended the country’s protections for 18 months, through September 9, 2026.

The latest allowance also comes as Trump has shifted his approach to Ukraine. In recent days, he declined to impose tougher sanctions on Russia over the four-year-old war and lifted sanctions on Russian diesel exports.

Key points

  • Ukrainian and Sudanese TPS protections remain in place temporarily, DHS confirmed Monday.
  • The department said announcements on the affected TPS holders would come at an appropriate time.
  • TPS provides eligible people from countries facing severe conditions the ability to stay and work lawfully.
