After quitting nicotine, Selena Gomez says vaping affected her voice and warns it’s not worth it

Gomez describes nicotine effects

The singer and actress said vaping nicotine had changed the way her voice sounds. In an Instagram video, she said she had recently weaned herself off nicotine. Gomez urged people who are vaping or trying to quit to avoid the habit. She said nicotine was difficult to give up and added that people facing addiction could get through it.

Lupus and vocal changes

Gomez has the chronic autoimmune disease lupus and has previously suggested it was affecting her vocal cords. Lupus flare-ups can inflame the larynx, or voice box, potentially making a voice raspy and strained, similar to cold symptoms.

She revealed her lupus diagnosis in a 2015 interview with Billboard. Gomez told the publication she had undergone chemotherapy and had withdrawn from public life until she felt confident and comfortable again.

Reaction to her vaping disclosure

Some people questioned Gomez’s nicotine use in light of the potential negative effects on her kidneys. Lupus symptoms can include kidney problems, as well as muscle and joint pain, fever, rashes, chest pain, hair loss and fatigue.

One person criticized her for vaping despite receiving a donated kidney. Another, MaxB, wrote on X that her honesty about nicotine addiction showed how difficult some habits can be to quit.
