Pope Leo plans to gradually resume duties after cancer surgery and hospital stay

Return to the Vatican

Leo addressed thousands gathered in St. Peter’s Square during the traditional Sunday Angelus blessing. The crowd cheered when he appeared at a window of the Apostolic Palace. He said the difficult stage of his recovery had passed and that he intended to resume activities gradually. Leo also said his recent experience had brought him closer to people dealing with illness and disability.

Surgery and recovery

Leo thanked the doctors, nurses and other staff at Gemelli hospital, where he was treated. His surgeon, Dr. Stefano Margaritora, said there were no clinical reasons the pope’s planned trip should not go ahead and expected a full recovery in about 10 more days.

Tests and upcoming travel

Doctors are examining the tumor and related lymph nodes, including their molecular and genetic features. The findings will guide decisions about possible additional care, such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy combined with chemotherapy, or targeted oral treatment.

Faithful welcome his return

Visitors in the square celebrated the pope’s appearance. A delegation from Africa danced after the blessing, while people from the United States said they were glad to pray alongside him again.

Some visitors expressed hope that Leo would recover fully and continue his work. He paused to wave before returning to his apartment in the Apostolic Palace.
