EU Quickly Preparing Russia Sanctions in Case Le Pen Is Elected in 2027

Sanctions Before Campaign Season

The EU is preparing possible sanctions on Russia ahead of France’s presidential election, according to a report. One source involved in EU discussions told The Telegraph that February could be the “last opportunity” for imposing sanctions.

Officials reportedly said Brussels would be “lucky” to secure sanctions after February, when France enters campaign mode. Europe has imposed 22 rounds of sanctions since Russia began its invasion in February 2022.

On Monday, sanctions were imposed on almost 1,600 Russian people and companies linked to the arms industry. The article describes this as the largest single sanctions listing since the Kremlin launched its full-scale war.

Le Pen’s Ukraine Position

Marine Le Pen, leader of the far-right National Rally, is described as the current favourite to win the election next year. She is seeking to replace President Emmanuel Macron and faces a challenge from left-wing leader Jean-Luc Melenchon.

Le Pen has argued that France cannot continue funding Ukraine, citing the “perilous” condition of the euro zone’s second-biggest economy. She told the Financial Times that France’s share of loans to Ukraine amounts to €18 billion, out of €90 billion provided overall.

Dispute Over EU Budget

The EU is seeking approval for a seven-year budget before France’s presidential election. The Commission has proposed nearly €2 trillion for 2028-2034, compared with roughly €1.2 trillion for 2021-2027.

Le Pen called the proposed budget “deeply objectionable” and vowed a “trial of strength” with Brussels if it is approved. She also said the proposal showed contempt for democratic processes in Europe. Le Pen has pledged to reduce France’s contribution to the EU budget, while acknowledging that carrying out the promise would be difficult.
