Heavy AI Collaboration: Meta’s Muse Spark Open Leaves Apple’s HomeView Baffled

A model for Mac Studios

Meta announced Muse Spark Open and described it as the most capable US open-weight model to date. The company said it is the first model in its class that can run on a desktop with two Apple M5 Ultra Mac Studios and the latest MLX framework.

Meta describes the model as natively multimodal, with 816 billion total parameters. It says the system excels at long-horizon tasks, complex software engineering and multi-step reasoning.

Rivals back the launch

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on X that Muse Spark Open’s weights were releasing that day and praised its performance on new Mac Studios, crediting work with Apple CEO John Ternus and Apple. Ternus congratulated the team, saying the model ran efficiently at its scale on a desk and that Mac Studio continued to advance on-device AI. Meta and Apple have generally been rivals, but the companies supported each other publicly around the launch.

Work spans several months

Meta chief AI officer Alexandr Wang told Axios he was excited to see the companies “playing nice again.” Axios also reported that Meta and Apple had been collaborating for several months. Apple published a technical post about MLX, an array framework for machine-learning tasks on Apple Silicon. The post also covered Muse Spark Open and two other open models.
