Henry Nowak killer’s mother could face deportation after prison release scheme

Deportation remains possible

The Home Office has signalled that Kaur could be considered under the government’s deportation scheme. She is an Indian national, but no decision or timetable for her deportation is reported.

Kaur was sentenced in July to three years for assisting an offender. She had spent several months on remand before sentencing.

Early release could shorten term

Kaur may serve less than half of her sentence under the government’s early release scheme, ITV News reported. The report said she could be released around the anniversary of Nowak’s death, but did not give a specific date.

Ministers have said expanding the scheme is necessary to prevent the justice system from collapsing. The issue received extensive attention over the summer.

Role in murder investigation

Digwa was sentenced to life imprisonment on 1 June, with a minimum term of 21 years, for murdering 18-year-old student Henry Nowak. The murder took place in Southampton on 3 December, after Digwa falsely claimed Nowak had racially abused him.

Prosecutor Nicholas Lobbenberg called Kaur’s conduct “criminality of the highest order” and said her role in removing the knife was “crucial”. Judge William Mousley KC said she had concealed the weapon among other items to help her son avoid being caught.

The arrest and handcuffing of Nowak while he was dying led to intense scrutiny of police actions. The Home Office said its thoughts remained with his family and friends.
