816-billion-parameter Muse model runs on two M5 Ultra Macs as Meta and Apple team to make AI models better

A model built for Mac Studios

Meta announced Muse Spark Open and called it the most capable US open-weight model to date. The company says it is the first model in its class that can run on a desktop with two Apple M5 Ultra Mac Studios and the latest MLX framework.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on X that the model’s weights were releasing that day and that it ran well on the new Mac Studios after work with Apple CEO John Ternus and Apple. Ternus congratulated the team and praised the model’s performance on Mac Studio.

Rivals collaborate publicly

Meta and Apple, usually competitors, worked together on the launch and publicly supported one another. Apple’s new CEO, John Ternus, said the model’s scale could run efficiently from a desk, and said Mac Studio continued to push the limits of on-device AI. Meta chief AI officer Alexandr Wang told Axios he was excited that the two companies were “playing nice again.” Axios also reported that the collaboration had continued for several months.

What Meta says it can do

Meta describes Muse Spark Open as a natively multimodal model with 816 billion total parameters. The company says it excels at long-horizon tasks, complex software engineering and multi-step reasoning.

Apple published a technical post about MLX, which it described as an array framework for machine-learning tasks on Apple Silicon. The post covered Muse Spark Open and two other open models.
