A quiet Belizean island

The writer has visited Belize twice and especially enjoys Tobacco Caye, a small island suited to a peaceful break amid nature. The week there included snorkeling, walks and time to relax.

Antigua and volcano views

After five visits to Guatemala, the writer still returns to Antigua. The nearby hike up Volcán de Acatenango offers views of Volcán de Fuego, its erupting neighbor. The writer has completed the hike three times and remains impressed by the scenery.

Monteverde after dark

In Costa Rica, the writer prefers the inland Monteverde region to the country’s beaches, describing it as a place that reflects the nation’s biodiversity. Daytime wildlife sightings were limited mostly to birds and insects. A guided hike at night revealed bats overhead and tree frogs hunting insects, bringing the forest to life.

Marine life and revolutionary history

In Honduras, the writer spent most of the trip on Utila, a Bay Island off the northern coast. A swim from the guesthouse dock brought sightings of fish, colorful coral and an eagle ray.

In Nicaragua, the writer’s favorite destination is León, a historic city in the northwest. A visit to the Museum of the Revolution stood out: the guide identified himself in displays and described fighting in the revolution as a teenager.
