Jeffrey Donaldson, former DUP leader, due to be sentenced for child abuse convictions including rape

Sentencing scheduled for Thursday

Donaldson is due before the court on Thursday for sentencing over child sex abuse convictions, including rape. Judge Paul Ramsey had earlier told him to expect a lengthy sentence.

Party and Assembly reviews

After Donaldson’s conviction, the DUP opened an independent review into issues arising from the case. The Northern Ireland Assembly also examined his conduct during his time at Stormont. That Assembly review, published last month, reported no relevant information that called for further investigation.

Political career and resignations

Donaldson entered politics as a UUP MLA for South Down in 1985. He was a UUP member from 1982 to 2003, then joined the DUP and later led the party.

He remained leader until March 2024, when he was charged with historical sexual offences. He later asked for his knighthood to be forfeited and resigned from the Privy Council with immediate effect.
