Could Arsene Wenger take on Gianni Infantino for Fifa presidency? Deadline nears

Infantino faces growing scrutiny
The Fifa Council is due to meet on Thursday, its first gathering since the Fifa Forward Enterprise scheme triggered a crisis. Leaders in Europe, North America and Asia have called for Infantino to leave office.
Fifa is expected to propose an additional $3.4bn (£2.6bn) for football development. Council members will also face questions about governance, the FFE scheme, the Fifa Peace Prize awarded to US President Donald Trump, and disciplinary procedures following the Folarin Balogun affair.

Wenger has support and doubts
Senior European football figures have urged Wenger to consider a surprise run. Supporters believe he is respected outside Europe, including in Asia, where he worked in Japan, and point to his backing for development in African football.
One Fifa-connected figure said they would be “amazed” if Wenger challenged the person who appointed him, and questioned whether he could manage football’s political relationships. Wenger has also drawn controversy for ideas including biennial World Cups and a proposed ‘daylight’ offside law.
A campaign would need nominations
Wenger supported expanding the World Cup to 48 teams, arguing it could advance the game in countries beyond traditional powers. The proposal has been well received in Africa and could help him if he chose to run.
In a statement about the withdrawn FFE project, Wenger said he learned of it through media coverage and supported its cancellation. He said he believed Fifa should operate independently, with commitment, transparency and integrity.
Wenger has until 18 November to declare his candidacy. Any contender would need nominations from at least five national associations.
