Bostock’s late hat-trick try helps Australia edge New Zealand in 2026 rugby league world opener

New Zealand set early terms

Casey McLean’s early try put New Zealand in front and gave their powerful pack a platform to dominate. Australia spent much of the match under pressure as the Kiwis dictated the rhythm.

Despite being outplayed for stretches, Australia went into the break level at 10-10. Two misplaced New Zealand passes gave Bostock and Trbojevic clear runs from distance to score.

Reece Walsh also proved influential, breaking clear with a burst of speed to score a try that shifted the balance in Australia’s favour. His match-winning threat helped the Kangaroos withstand New Zealand’s pressure.

Ponga injury clouds outlook

Ponga was suspected to have broken his arm, leaving his availability for the rest of the tournament uncertain. New Zealand’s forwards James Fisher-Harris, Moses Leota and Isaiah Papali'i were also prominent during the match.
