Unclear Counting Methods: Jazeera Probe Exposes Fake Viewing Numbers for Israeli Counter-Film

How the website changed
The website nazadocumentary.com was registered on September 16, days after NAZA premiered, through Cloudflare. Its owner’s details were hidden. The Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine showed the site first presented itself as NAZA’s official website, with information about its directors, screenings and press. It also framed the film as exposing systems behind what it called the calculated mass killing of terrorists in Gaza. By September 30, that page had been replaced by a new title: “NAZA: The Real Story”.

Views differ sharply
The website claimed more than 44 million views, but the full 49-minute film on its official YouTube channel had fewer than 130,000 views by September 30. The website counter was therefore roughly 336 times higher than the YouTube figure.
The YouTube channel had fewer than 2,000 subscribers, while the film’s X account had 170 followers. The investigation examined domain registries, web archives, source code and three independent traffic tools.
Tracking remains unclear
The site collects viewing data without making it public. After about 25 seconds of playback, it sends a “watch-tracker” file that identifies a viewing session and which parts were watched.

Film’s directors faced threats
The counter-film was created in response to the global resonance of NAZA. Its directors, Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, were accused of treason.
