Mechanism’s first Switch 2 case is as awesome as I hoped it would be

Mechanism has released the Basecase, its first protective case for Nintendo’s Switch 2, following delays. The $49 shell also connects with the company’s modular accessories, including mounts sold separately.
The case leaves the console’s controls, ports, vents and full kickstand accessible. Its rear panel can be swapped for a custom 3D-printed plate, with examples designed to hold Lego figures or game cartridges.
Attachable Joy-Con grips come in two sizes and improve comfort, according to The Verge’s review. Each grip can also hold a game cartridge, and 3D-printed designs could offer other shapes, such as supports for resting fingers.
The Basecase cannot fit into Nintendo’s standard dock while attached. Mechanism includes a USB-C adapter for dock use; the reviewer found setup less straightforward than advertised. Owners of certain third-party docks from Jsaux or Genki do not need the adapter.
Key points
- The $49 shell protects the Switch 2 and works with Mechanism’s modular accessories.
- A removable rear panel and interchangeable grips allow for custom 3D-printed designs.
- The case blocks standard dock use; an included USB-C adapter provides a workaround.
