India’s Youth Protests Challenge Narendra Modi

Young protesters gathered in New Delhi on Saturday to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, as anger grew over a disputed revision of voter lists and the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Police mounted a large security operation, setting up checkpoints and barricades and detaining demonstrators. Newsday reported that thousands were detained; AsiaOne described scores being taken away by police.
Authorities also restricted access to parts of the city and suspended travel and telecommunications links, according to AsiaOne. Police said they had refused permission for the rally because its application was submitted late, Newsday reported.
The protest was part of a wider campaign by the youth-led Cockroach movement, whose leaders were among those detained, according to AsiaOne. The group condemned the detentions and called for its leaders’ release.
