Pope Leo Will Have Surgery to Remove Growth on Lung

Pope Leo XIV said Sunday that he will have surgery in the coming days to remove a nodule on his lung, discovered during recent medical checks.

Leo described the nodule as small, localized and detected at a very early stage. He said doctors recommended removing it.

The Vatican said the pope is expected to need about a week to recover. It has not specified the exact date of the operation.

Leo shared the news during his Sunday noon blessing in St. Peter’s Square and asked for prayers. He may miss a Wednesday Mass marking the end of a conference, according to PBS.
