My parents spent 25 years celebrating me. For their 30th anniversary, I finally got to celebrate them.

The writer’s parents met as teenagers in 1986 and married in June 1996. Their twin children, born in 2000, planned a celebration for the couple’s 30th anniversary.

The writer and their twin arranged a surprise gathering for more than 40 relatives and friends at a restaurant near the family home in Westchester County, New York.

Their grandmother traveled from Delaware to help prepare. The writer managed invitations, decorations and vendors, while the twin used a planned visit from Austin as cover.

The parents expected a small dinner but instead found their loved ones waiting to welcome them. They spent the evening talking and looking at photo displays charting their years together.

Afterward, decorations and photographs around the family home kept the occasion present. The writer said the celebration highlighted their parents’ lives and milestones beyond their role as caregivers.
