FBI arrests suspected member of ShinyHunters in connection with breach of bureau

FBI Director Kash Patel said Friday that investigators had arrested another person suspected of ties to ShinyHunters. The group is accused of breaking into the FBI’s jobs website and taking employees’ personal information.

The FBI has not disclosed the suspect’s identity or where the arrest occurred. Two sources who spoke to CBS News said the person was detained in Pennsylvania; the bureau did not confirm that detail.

The website was breached in September. The hackers claimed they took between two and three terabytes of data connected to FBI staff, exploiting a vulnerability in Oracle’s PeopleSoft human-resources software.

Some former FBI agents have described the incident as potentially one of the most serious intrusions into a federal system since the 2015 Office of Personnel Management attack. The FBI said it removed the contractor involved and took steps to reduce risks and protect staff.

The arrest is part of a series of cases involving alleged ShinyHunters members. Another suspected member, 24-year-old Pepijn van der Stap, was previously reported arrested in Amsterdam. The FBI has not released further details about the latest case.
