5 jewelry trends that are in right now and 4 that are out, according to jewelers and stylists

From a diamond necklace to a pair of gold hoops, a simple touch of jewelry has long been an easy way to add just a little something to any outfit.

But this fall, straightforward and understated styles seem to be taking a back seat to pieces with more personality.

That's why Business Insider asked two jewelers and a stylist to share the trends they're seeing take off this autumn and the ones that are starting to fade. Here's what they said.

Nishit Mehta, president and CEO of La Joya Jewelry, said he's seeing men wear more expressive jewelry, including thicker rings with stones, as well as brooches.

JesseRay Vasquez, jewelry designer and the founder of the brand Nickho Rey, also said statement rings are an especially strong trend for men right now.

This summer's jewelry trends embraced plenty of color through beaded necklaces and other styles. And according to Kendra Sharpe, a stylist and founder of Kendra Sharpe Styling and Creative, that theme is continuing into fall.

However, she recommended shifting toward jewel tones, browns, and deeper purples to complement the new season.

Vasquez also said he's seeing pops of bright color, specifically paired with classic metals like silver and white gold.

According to Sharpe, statement cuffs are a growing trend. Part of their appeal is their simplicity: rather than stacking several smaller pieces of jewelry, wearing a single large cuff can stand out on its own.

She also recommended experimenting styling options, like wearing the cuff over a long sleeve rather than directly on your wrist.

Sharpe said pearls are trending this fall season, but with a fresher, less traditional feel. She told BI these iterations will be supersized, multistrand, more irregular, and natural-looking.

She also noted there are a variety of ways to wear pearls this fall, whether as a single pendant, a strand, or an uneven set of earrings.
