I let my 5-year-old walk half a mile alone. Four days later, there was a warrant for my arrest.

This story is based on an interview with Karyann Parkinson, 36, a prospective attorney from Northern Virginia awaiting bar qualification. It has been edited for length and clarity.

My life was turned upside down in early June 2026 — two weeks before the birth of my fifth child.

I was eight-and-a-half months pregnant when I opened the front door to a security guard from our gated community. He was standing behind my 5-year-old son, Sam.

Sam, who looked scared, was clutching a handful of goose feathers he'd gathered from a pond inside our HOA, about half a mile from our house.

I allowed him to go alone because he wanted to gather more feathers after we'd returned from our daily walk and bike ride there.

Everyone in our neighborhood was close-knit and knew each other. There was 24-hour security, a 25-mph speed limit, sidewalks, and wide grass verges.

Sam was a responsible and independent kid. He'd made that journey hundreds of times with me, my husband, Dallin, 37, and our other children, now 7, 11, and 14.

However, the security guard thought it was dangerous. He said that a passerby had alerted him after spotting Sam. He said that it was "against the rules" for him to be out and about on his own, and the association didn't permit it.

I said I didn't know of an HOA bylaw that prohibited children from being alone.
